This question came about from a customer that inquired about the Two Room Camping Tent from Trek. This tent incorporates a special fabric called Poly Canvas, this fabric is polyester coated canvas fabric that is impervious to rain.

In this situation, a rain fly is not needed to keep the inside of this tent dry. But not all tents are created equally, most other models use a standard tent nylon that is treated with silicone to reduce the amount of water that can pass through the fabric. This type of fabric is rated in pressure required to make water pass through the fabric. Expressed in mm, such as 1000 mm, 1500 mm, 2000 mm, etc. The higher the rating, the harder it is to push water through the fabric. Most cheap tents are around 500 mm, four season or expedition tents range in the 2000 to 2500 mm range, it is wise to choose a tent with at least a rating of 1000 mm, this rating works well for most rain conditions.

Is a fly only for rain? No, a fly can also help keep the inside of your tent cooler by reflecting the sun’s UV rays, it also helps to slow down deterioration of the tent roof caused by UV rays. Whether to choose a tent with or with out a rain fly will depend on the fabric and your needs in a tent.

The first step to cleaning your tent is to setup in a place where you have access to electricity and low pressure water.

Step 1. Light Cleaning
Tools needed: A shop vacuum, Brush head accessory, and extension cord.

Thoroughly vacuum the entire tent using the shop vac and brush head extension. Do not use without the brush head accessory. Carefully sweep the brush head from side to side to clean the entire floor, walls, interior roof and all seams. Repeat this process on the exterior of your tent. This is usually the only cleaning your tent will require.

Step 2. Heavy Cleaning
Tools needed: Non bleach laundry detergent, bucket, very soft bristle brush, water hose with spray attachment.

This process should only be used on heavily soiled tents. Mix a small amount of detergent in your bucket with slightly warm water. Lightly wet one section of your tent with hose sprayer. Dip soft bristle brush into soapy water and very lightly brush tent to clean, taking care not to put excessive pressure on any part of your tent. Lightly spray washed area with water hose and spray accessory to remove soap. After the entire tent has been cleaned, leave the tent setup to dry completely.

Things you should not do:
Never use a power washer to clean your tent, high pressure and chemicals used in their soaps can be very harmful to tent fabric.

Never use spot removers, these contain harsh chemicals and cleaners that can remove the waterproofing from the fabric and cause water leaks and fabric deterioration.

One thing you can buy them that they will love is a swing set. It has a slide on one end that is wavy. It has 2 swings that they love to just sit and swing on for hours. If you want to try tent camping with the little ones, make a trial run in the back yard. Kids don’t always understand the meaning of camping; they don’t realize they will not be in their cozy little beds but out in the fresh air. So having a trial camping experience should give them an understanding of what a real camping trip will be like.

Once you have the backyard camp out and it worked out good, make plans for a real camping trip. Let the kids be part of the planning. Make a list of the items they need to bring with them. If you will be near a fishing spot, they need their little fishing poles and tackle boxes. If you plan to swim, they need swim suits. Don’t forget the sunscreen and hats for all of you.

Kids like hot dogs and burger cooked outside. Take the food they like, not the food you prefer. A fancy steak is adult food for another trip. Get a big bag of marshmallows for after dinner. Make sure you explain to the kids that sticks are for marshmallow cooking, not to play with.

Don’t let them wander around too far from camp. Keep an eye on things constantly. Take them on hikes through the woods or sit under a big oak tree and tell age appropriate stories. Have them look for certain leaves or rocks and start a collection.

Teach the kids the proper way to leave the area; no trash should be left on the ground. This is a good opportunity to teach them about the environment. Explain why we have to protect the woods and rivers for the next generation.

Kids will tire easily when they have been playing all day. Just in case they need a little down time, take along some coloring books and crayons. It will keep them busy and quiet for a while.

Taking the grandchildren on a camping trip can be a great adventure for all of you.

It’s hard to track game if you can’t see it. Therefore, one of the most important accessories for hunters is a good pair of binoculars.

While there are literally thousands of different models of binoculars on the market, not all are suitable for hunting. Most are not rugged enough for the woods, marsh or field. Many are not suitable for low-light conditions. Some are too powerful, and others not powerful enough.

Here are some factors you should consider when choosing hunting binoculars.

Binocular Construction:

Hunting is a rugged sport that puts demands on your equipment, including your binoculars.

Hunting binoculars should feature some sort of rubberized exterior armoring to protect them from being damaged if dropped or bumped against trees, brush, rocks and so on.

Because you’ll likely be hunting in extreme weather conditions, you’ll want a pair of binoculars that can withstand such conditions. They should be waterproof, and the lenses should be fog-proof. Another feature to consider are the lens caps. Binoculars with attached caps will protect the lenses, but not require you to fumble in your pockets looking for lens caps if it starts to rain or snow.

Roof prism binoculars are popular with hunters. Light enters the front (objective) lenses, and is then redirected through the roof prism to the rear (ocular) lenses. The roof prism design allows the binoculars to be more compact than binoculars that transmit the light directly from the objective lenses to the ocular lenses.

Binocular Lenses:

When it comes to lenses, bigger is indeed better. The larger the objective lens, the more light the lens transmits to your eyes. If you like to hunt at dawn or dusk, you’ll want the largest objective lenses you can get. The objective lens size is the second number in the manufacturer’s description of the binoculars. For example, 10×42 binoculars have 42 millimeter objective lenses. Objective lenses for hunting binoculars range from 40 millimeters to over 60 millimeters in diameter. Again, bigger is usually better.

When choosing hunting binoculars, look for phase corrected lenses. Phase correction is a coating on the lenses that increases the sharpness, contrast and color saturation. When you’re trying to spot game that blends in with its surroundings, you need every edge you can get.

Another feature to look for in hunting binoculars is nitrogen-filled optics. The nitrogen inside the binoculars displaces oxygen, so that moisture cannot form inside the optics, fogging the interior lenses.

The rear (ocular) lenses are another thing to consider when choosing hunting binoculars. If you’re like most people, your eyes aren’t identical when it comes to focus. Therefore, you’ll want to look for binoculars that allow each ocular lens to be adjustable for focus.

Consider, too, the amount of eye relief the binoculars feature. This is the distance from the lens to your eye at which you can still see the view. If you wear prescription glasses or sunglasses while hunting, you’ll need some eye relief. Also, binoculars with good eye relief allow you to bring them up to your eyes quickly, without having to get your eyes perfectly aligned. 15 to 20 millimeters of eye relief is generally considered optimum.

Binocular Magnification:

The first number in the manufacturer’s description of binoculars is the magnification. A pair of 8×42 binoculars magnifies the view by eight times.

For long-distance hunting, such as prairie dog hunting, a high magnification may be desirable. But for most types of wood/field/marsh hunting, too much magnification is undesirable. You’ll be viewing too small a portion of the area you’re scouting.

8x or 10x magnification is generally considered ideal for most hunting applications.

Many manufacturers offer zoom binoculars, which allow you to vary the magnification. In practice, though, zoom binoculars aren’t always ideal for hunting. They tend to be more fragile and weigh more than fixed-magnification binoculars. Also, as mentioned previously, high magnifications restrict your view of an area.

The amount of area binoculars allow you to view is called the “field of view.” The field of view (FOV) is referred to in degrees, or in feet at a specified distance. For example, 6 degrees of field of view is common. Expressed in feet, a pair of binoculars with 6 degrees field of view will allow you to see 314 feet of area at 1,000 yards.

Other things to consider when choosing hunting binoculars:

Weight is a consideration for any hunting equipment, including binoculars. 32 ounces may not sound like a lot of weight but, after a full day in the field, it will feel like it. Most binoculars made for hunting weigh around 20 ounces.

When selecting your binoculars, pay attention to the warranty the manufacturer offers. You’re going to be exposing your binoculars to some pretty rough treatment, so you’ll want the best warranty you can get. Many manufacturers offer warranties that last twenty years or more. Some even offer lifetime warrantees.

Properly cared for, a good pair of binoculars will serve you for decades. When you consider the cost of a single hunting trip, quality $300 to $500 binoculars are a great investment.

1. Fresh Clean Air
Being outdoors in city environments can be very unhealthy. The massive amounts of pollutants from cars, factories and power plants all contribute to this unhealthy environment. Trees are the number one air filters of nature. Being out away from major cities and into wooded areas can mean much fresher air to breathe, thus much healthier for you. If you have allergies or pollen does bother you, be sure to bring all medications or pick up some over the counter allergy relief pills.

2. Exercise
Although a little exercise is obtained by setting up camp, many more activities are available while camping. Most things you do for exercise while at home, can also be done while camping. Bike rides can stimulate your body and provide a good workout. Canoe trips are excellent exercise as is backpacking or hiking trips. Many outdoor games are available, like football, basketball or horseshoes. Easy and compact to carry with you on your trip. Some campgrounds will have rental offices where you can get bikes, canoes and hiking equipment. Some offer convenience stores where outdoor games or toys will be available.

3. Relaxation
Ok, if you have worked hard and just need to rest, this is available too. Be sure to bring along all necessary equipment for a rest full stay. A comfortable sleeping bag, padded cot or air mattress for sleeping is a must. A reclining chair for day time naps or reading under the shade tree. Some other things you may want to consider are small electric fans, plenty of water and juice drinks, and a camp stove for meals.

Go out and have a good time with your family and friends, camping is a great way to enjoy life and the great outdoors.

A 4 season tent, also known as winter tents or all season tents, are made to provide shelter year round. Four season tents often have stronger poles and material to withstand the harsh conditions. These tents will have steeper pitched roofs to help snow and ice from building up. Heavier fabrics may be used to help retain warmth.

Backpacking Tents
These tents are considered lightweight or ultra lightweight as weight is a common concern for backpackers and hikers. How to ship camping gear from home when flying?

I’m considering a camping trip in June from the midwest to somewhere in the Rockies. I have considered shipping my gear by UPS etc. to a local office, then flying out there and picking up my gear at the shipping office. Are there other options like renting gear? Should I just drive?

Observation rather than collection became fashionable in the 1800s. The term itself began to be used around 1901 with the publication of a book that helped watchers identify different species. This help in identification along with the advent of the use of binoculars caused a rise in popularity. Birding was centered primarily in the east, specifically the eastern seaboard for much of the early and mid 20th century. Today it is done throughout the country and the world.

Bird watching can involve simple to complex equipment and technology. Binoculars are the first tool of the trade. They help birders observe the details of their subject. Sizes range from those that will accommodate just one person to those used as barracks, such as in the military, with room for many people. Tents for use in a recreational setting can be categorized in two basic ways. They are either small and light enough to be carried in a back pack or they are large and heavy enough to require some sort of vehicular transportation to the pitch site.

Tents can be constructed of different materials. Canvas camping tents are made of cotton. This fabric is advantageous because it is water resistant and holds up well over time. Cotton is also incredibly strong. Nylon, felt and polyester are other typically used fabrics. Water resistance is often a major consideration in construction and development. It is measured in terms of the water pressure needed to penetrate. A rating system has been developed to help consumers know how water resistant a given tent may be. Other considerations when shopping for a tent include a desire for windows. If insects are a consideration, windows should have some sort of mesh protector.

It is a constant balancing act between weight and utility. Water is an item that is absolutely necessary. A water supply for a long trip can be incredibly heavy to carry. For long trips, backpackers may depend on getting water from a lake or spring. This plan should also include some kind of water purification method such as boiling, chemical purification tablets or portable water filters.

Food for a backpacking trip can take a variety of forms. Some pack food items. Some catch and prepare fish. If food is packed and brought along, it should have high energy content and be non perishable and light in weight. Energy bars and trail mix are common choices. There are also foods designed specifically for this activity. Those who choose to catch and prepare the food need to plan ahead to bring the supplies necessary to cook the meal. Small stoves and other cooking utensils have been designed to be portable, light and easy to transport on an outdoor adventure.

When embarking on a backpacking trip, it is important to rely on common sense. Planning should go into where to go, how to get there and what to bring along. Cross bow hunting and the weapon used for it date all the way back to the 5th century BC. The Greek historian Diodorus Siculus wrote about the use of a similar firing weapon. Some argue that it can be dated even further in the past to the 3rd century BC. References continue to be made through the time of the Roman Empire. The medieval period is when the look of the piece came closer to what is used today. The armies of the time used the weapon along with others such as javelins in battle. The crossbowmen corps was an elite force in the medieval army. It continued to be used as the weapon of choice among the best soldiers throughout the medieval period.

Ancient China also has evidence of cross bow hunting. Influential books of the time make several references to the weapon and its use. Remains of actual ancient versions have been discovered throughout China. They were found to have been used by the famous Terracotta Army. The Chinese were also instrumental in the evolution of the weapon. The repeating form with a system of automatic reload was developed in China during the time of the Han Dynasty. There is evidence that the weapon actually originated in the country of China. It was used specifically for hunting, as opposed to warfare in Western and Central Africa. The technology was brought to the Americas by African slaves. In America, it was used for killing game when gunpowder was not available or was too expensive to purchase.

Today, the weapon is used primarily for the sport of cross bow hunting rather than for warfare. As the sport has developed so has the equipment and levels of mastery. Beginners can certainly become proficient at straight, short shots in a relatively short amount of time. However, practice is required to master more complicated shots and trajectories. As one becomes more involved in the sport, more difficult shots are attempted and achieved. More technical equipment is available for the master.

Start your family camping vacation by picking the right place to go. National forests and parks will often have areas reserved for camping. Call ahead and ask where to go and how much it will cost. We’ve all been their, well some of us has. You arrive at the campsite only to find litter scattered everywhere. Did a Bear come through and destroy the campsite, carry off everything but the trash? Probably not. Keeping a clean campsite is more enjoyable, safer, by not attracting wild animals and makes the next campers to use the site, happy.

Excess food should be placed in zip-lock baggies before placing in the trash to help avoid food smells attracting animals. Never throw food on the ground. Aluminum cans can be stored in a separate trash bag for recycling later. Rolls of paper towels or cloth rags will help clean up spills or dry your hands after washing.

Inspect your campsite. Walk around the area picking up broken glass, cans, pulling up broken tent stakes, looking for tree roots that may cause injury or possibly puncture the floor of your tent. In certain areas, be on the look out for plants like cactus or poison ivy / oak, remove carefully.

Setting up. After a through inspection, your ready to set up camp. Choose a flat spot for the tent, lay out your tent floor protector, unroll your tent and set it up. The first job of setting up your campsite should always be erection of the camping tent. This gives space to put other camping gear with laying it on the ground where it might get soiled. Set up tables and chairs, if using portable toilet, you may want to set up your privacy / shower tent fairly soon. At this time, you may want to take any trash accumulated up to this point and place in a trash bag.

After setup. You may be ready to relax, take a hike or cook a meal. If taking a walk or hike, be sure to carry a small trash bag to dispose of any plastic bottles or cans you take with you, small trash bags can be tied to your backpack, belt or belt loop. After cooking your meals, place all leftovers in plastic containers or zip-locks and store in the cooler. As before, place excess food in zip-locks before throwing away.

Nighttime. If the campsite provides trash barrels, a dumpster or cans, place your trash in them every night. No cans available, place trash bags as far away from your campsite as possible, don’t set them on your neighbors site. Wild animals just love a free and easy meal and you should keep them as far away from you as possible.

Taking down. After you have had all the fun you can stand, it’s time to move on. Taking down your campsite is usually a little easier than setup. When you have everything packed up and ready to go, walk your campsite again cleaning up all the trash and leave the site clean for the next campers. Doing a walk around is a necessity, not only checking for trash, but just to make sure you have not left any gear or accessories like tent stakes, hammers, stake pullers, etc… behind.
