1. What disaster can happen in your area?

What types of disasters are probable in your area, floods, earthquakes, fire and hurricane? Learn community-warning signals. Does the kids school, your work place have disaster plans? If they do, understand their plan and what you should do.

2. Develop a disaster plan for your family.

Develop your disaster plan with a check list. What each family member should do for each event, such as, fire, earthquake, flood or explosion. Pick a meeting place outside the home or neighborhood in case you are not at home. Choose more than one exit from the house. Who is responsible for various things, such as, the family pet, utility shut offs. Know where the fire extinguishers are located. Have an emergency phone contact away from your area.

3. Emergency supplies, including your pet.

Keep at least a three-day supply of water and food for each person. A first aid kit, special medications, battery powered flashlight, battery powered radio with extra batteries, toilet articles, plastic trash bags, eating utensils, soap, paper towels, pet food, blanket for each person, gloves, and a small charcoal BBQ for heating food. Rotate your water every six months, food yearly. These are suggestions, tailor your needs to your family.

4.Practice and maintain your emergency plan.

Practice your plan every six months. Conduct evacuation drills. Post emergency phone numbers. Do a hazard survey. Look for objects that can fall and block your exit, such as unsecured bookshelves or water heater, mirrors, or objects that can fall on you from shelves. Make sure everyone knows where the emergency supplies are located.

5. When disaster strikes.

Put your disaster plan into action. Are all accounted for at your meeting place? Check for injuries. Listen to your radio for instructions. Keep pets confined. Check your neighbors especially the elderly and disabled. Do not use electrical switches or matches in case of gas leaks. Do not attempt to retrieve belongings if your home is unsafe. Use common sense and remain as calm as you can. You are prepared.
